What is TMJ Disorder (TMD)?

TMJ disorder occurs when the paired joints on either side of the face that hinges your upper jaw to your lower jaw, as well as the muscles surrounding them, endure tension and force that affects their function. When this happens, something as simple as chewing your food or yawning can lead to pain or be difficult.
How We Diagnose TMJ Problems

Our experienced dentists in Richardson can diagnose TMJ disorder by examining your jaw joints and facial muscles, as well as discussing your symptoms with you. If you have had a jaw injury in the past, have a misaligned bite, or you grind your teeth when you sleep, your risk of developing TMJD is much higher.
Equilibration/ Occlusal Adjustments

In some cases, improperly fitted restorations, like a tooth-colored filling or crown, or misshapen teeth can lead to a minor bite issue that causes more tension to be placed on one or both of the jaw joints. In this situation, we may recommend equilibration, where we will adjust the shape/size of the tooth or restoration, to balance the bite.
Occlusal Splints

If you grind your teeth at night or your jaw rests in an odd position that could be exacerbating your symptoms, we can craft a customized occlusal splint for you to wear as you sleep. It will prevent damage due to bruxism and slightly adjust your resting jaw position to reduce strain and minimize jaw fatigue and discomfort throughout the day.
BOTOX® Injections

BOTOX is a highly effective treatment for addressing symptoms of TMJ disorder, like jaw pain and tension headaches caused by clenching. Dr. Mansi or Dr. T will inject the BOTOX into the muscles surrounding the jaw joints to help them relax. The effects can last up to several months and treatment can be re-administered every two to three months based on your needs.
